Easy! Excuse the rapid succession posting... at least this is a video clip...
It tickles me the way music invokes memories so strongly. A simple melody can invoke a flood of memories, complete with emotions.
Today, when my iTunes shuffled to playing Pink Martini's "Hey Eugene" I couldn't help but stop working (yes, I'm working on a Saturday.), smile a pearly grin and sit back in my chair remembering the marvelous moments of Labor Day weekend aboard the raft up in the Delta -- The sun had just started setting, and we were setting up Club Silas Clyde; the silly name for the ad hoc disco we set up atop the roof of one of the boats in the raft up.
Pink Martini, the night's dinner music played on the speakers across all 10 boats. The Cuban rhythms were the perfect transition from the 100 degree day through dinner and into the night's activities. When the song switched to something slow, the people started to... well... revolt... they yelled "no", "something upbeat," "something we can dance to." I even heard a bit of whining somewhere in the crowd. It wasn't time to slow down; it was time to to play again.
When the crowd quieted a bit, Jeff yelled "Hey Eugene," and with a little effort from the DJ d'moment, Hey Eugene started to play. Jeff grabbed Steve's hand and the two started dancing, alone, on the rooftop lit by the sunset backdrop. It was surreal--something you would see in a movie and think to yourself "yes, but, that doesn't ever really happen in real life. we all just wish it would." The moment couldn't have been more perfect. People smiling and laughing while lovers danced in the sunset.
I was thrilled when my lead developer linked me to Ryan Stewart's blog about VoIP technology via web-based Flash from a company called Ribbit.
For non-techies, it means that they've come up with a relatively safe way to talk through say... your blog... the same way you do through your phone. Sure, there's Skype which already allows folks to talk through the web, but there are some major security issues with Skype and others like it. As Ryan writes "Being able to incorporate this functionality into a browser app is going to be game changing and people at Skype should be very afraid. With Flash 9 penetration at around 92%, and absolutely no download required to make this work, this will be the most accessible telephone application ever and the barrier to entry is almost nothing." Can hardly wait to see what happens.
I just love being tickled by new technology that makes sense.
